Each sculpture is hand-carved from wood and painted to capture the essence of the living bird.
Jeff Demarest was born in rural Connecticut, where a childhood exposure to the work of John James Audubon and the collection of exotic species in his father's aviary sparked a lifelong fascination with birds.
Jeff's interest in carving birds from wood began as an adolescent. Following a career in the military, he trained in the design and construction of fine furniture at the School for Professional Crafts in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was there that he renewed his desire to replicate nature, refining the skills of three-dimensional sculpture.
Jeff now creates his unique pieces of art in his studio in eastern North Carolina.
“I want the viewer to take a moment and participate in the display of my sculpture. I have created a sculpture, not another specimen. I consider my best work yet to come.”
From reference study and design sketches to rough carving, detailed feather work, and final painting — each sculpture is a journey through craft and observation.
Work is commission only. Jeff welcomes your ideas.
